Keep your finger off of the trigger until you are on target and ready to fire.
One of the most important firearms safety rules of all time. Leaving your finger on the trigger can result in an unintentional discharge due to a startle effect, a postural imbalance, or a sympathetic response due to the exertion of maximum force. The bottom line is that it is imperative that you build the habit of keeping your trigger finger straight and above the trigger guard at all times when not in the act of shooting or preparing to shoot.
