This hotly debated question still comes up frequently in classes. While many in the “gun crowd” fall on the side of chamber carry, the truth is there are pros and cons to both sides. I carry with a round in the chamber; however, there are articulable reasons not to. If the gun is taken away from the shooter, the assailant would have to chamber a round before firing. There is also less likely chance of an unintentional discharge when there is not a round chambered. However, the major flaw in not carrying a round chambered is the added time it takes to get the gun ready to use by chambering the round in the moment of stress. This is a big deal that cannot be ignored and is the primary reason that so many concealed carriers choose to carry with a round in the chamber.
Responsible citizens who choose to carefully and thoughtfully exercise their right to carry a firearm are a tremendous benefit to society. In many cases across the county, these citizens have intervened to protect lives and prevent tragedies from occurring. I have been blessed to train thousands of these citizens in the last decade and look forward to teaching many more in the years ahead.
